I remember having a conversation a couple months ago with somebody (Intro?) where we were discussing some of the ways the movie fails at not being sexist, and they brought up the way that, you know, every single female character is at some point made to parade around either naked or in their underwear, and it’s not like that’s the case with any of the dudes. This scene with Erik is really the closest we get (and it’s pretty clearly, I think, presented in a way that’s not intended to be sexual the way the women are – though of course whether we reinterpret the camera’s gaze for ourselves is a whole different thing).
Anyway. Thanks for taking the partial nudity for the team, Erik.
Let me be totally prurient for a moment here and say: Wow, I hadn’t noticed this before, but apparently Erik’s side of the bed is the left. (Er… as you are in the bed, not as you are facing it.)
Well, shit, we’re just not gonna be compatible, then. Guess I’ll need to get me a Wesley (who sleeps on the right). Or, presumably, a Charles. *g*
(…man, now I want to look through all the movies and figure out which side each of their characters likes to sleep on…)
Based on what we can see of the layout of the room, the door would be somewhere on or right near the wall that the camera is looking from, which makes the left side of the bed the “safe" side (if someone busts through the door looking to do you harm, they have to cross more distance to get to you, as well as you being able to quickly roll off the far side and put the bed in between you and the threat). So I wonder if Erik chose the left because he prefers the left, or just because it’s more defensible.
Makes me want to see (secretly?)protective!Erik taking the side closest to the door so that Charles will be in the safer position.
